Overpowering the Sun - with a small speedlight !

Overpowering the sun with a small off-camera flash, well who would have thought it ????

Believe it or not, this is a very simple process that anyone can do with a small flash.
It can even be achieved by the pop-up flash of your camera!

What you will be doing is using the ND4 filter to block out some light. The Sunny F16 rule
can be brought down to a Sunny F5.6/F8 rule by using either a ND filter, a circular polariser,
or both. I used both.

Here is what you need to do it.
Kit:
Camera
Off camera flash (or pop-up flash)
e-bay remotes (approx $40.00), or flash cord.
This is used to remotely fire flash. (Or use pop-up flash)
ND4 filter (to block out some light)
Polariser filter(not really necesary, don't use if shooting wide angle)
Molly

Here is how you will do it.
Process:
1. Set camera to MANUAL.
2. Set Shutter speed to max flash sync speed.
3. Set aperture to around f8-f11
4. Put flash on a stand (or someone hold it for you), or pop-up flash)
5. Place flash 180 degrees from sun (cross lighting), if using pop-up flash stand facing the sun
and move around until there is no fear of sun glare.
6. Choose your position , Shoot and check image.
7. If your Molly is too bright, either stop down your aperture or move your flash back away from Molly.
- If your Molly is too dark, guess what you do ????
8. Go have fun . . . its easy
9. Post any examples here.
10. Thanks, I hope you try this and enjoy it.

Please don't get too bogged down with specific settings; play around and let your photography be fluid.

* Note: Aim to photograph whilst the sun is high in the sky, but not directly above your head. Plce your
subject so as the background is very bright, with low contrast (no big dark shadowy areas)

Please email me if you have any queires or would l ike tuition on a specific subject.

Kindest regards
